Storing prescription medicines

By Petula Wright

Is the bathroom the best place for our prescription medicines? I’ll let you decide. John Ghee, a chemist at a pharmaceutical standards company, says there are several reasons drugs go bad. 1) The age of the drug or its expiration date. 2) The moisture level, i.e., some pills disintegrate and in others that active ingredients may degrade. 3) The amount of light. Many chemicals are light sensitive and will degrade under it; that’s why most bottles are amber colored. 4) Heat or temperatures that are too high will cause some drugs to degrade.

What’s your verdict? Are you going to keep any of your drugs – prescription or otherwise – in your bathroom’s medicine cabinet? This writer has decided against that storage method and has chosen the safety of the top of the refrigerator.
